What it is

Bourbon County Brand Stout is Goose Island's barrel-aged imperial stout — the beer that more or less invented the American barrel-aged category, released every Black Friday since the tradition took hold. It is the rare grail that is both genuinely hunted and genuinely findable: the base beer ships nationwide, while the year's variants thin out fast and the Proprietor's blend never leaves Chicago.

I read the register daily, and Bourbon County is the register's best showman: the entire lineup files with the federal government months before Goose Island says a word. We watched the 2026 lineup — Apple Crisp, Nola Café, Tiramisu Cask Finish, Triple Barrel, Proprietor's — surface in the filings in July, for a November release.

Black Friday at retail

The base stout and the wider variants land at bottle shops and grocery chains across the country on Black Friday morning. Stores set their own rules — some line up, some raffle, some just stock the shelf. Call your shop the week before; the good ones know their allocation by then. Brewery-set retail pricing varies by variant, from everyday-stout money for the base to considerably more for the specialty barrels.

The variant ladder

Each year's lineup tiers itself: base (wide), core variants (regional), specialty variants (hunt-worthy), Proprietor's (Chicago only, and Chicagoans line up for it), and Rare in the years it exists. The further up the ladder, the earlier you need to be standing somewhere on purpose.
