The field scanner
Scan a can
Scan a can identifies a beer from its barcode or its label. A barcode is matched against 1,751 UPCs the register has linked to federal filings; a label photo is matched against the artwork of 43,871 labels on file with the US TTB since December 17, 2016.
Every beer legally sold in the US has its artwork on federal file, so even a taproom can with no barcode can be matched to its filing. When neither the barcode nor the label matches, the scanner says the register hasn't seen the beer — it never guesses. How the register is read →
No barcode, taproom can, tiny run? Read the label — we match it against the artwork on file with the federal government.
