Porter243 labels: American, English, brown and robust porters: brown malt, chocolate notes, less weight than a stout. New labels rise in late summer as breweries prepare the cold months. A porter in a brewery's line often outlives its trendier siblings — the same label, approved again for years.
Imperial Porter64 labels: Porter at high strength, often barrel-aged or adjuncted, the porter's answer to the imperial stout. Rare enough that each new label is worth a look, and the label usually says imperial outright. Where the fine print names a barrel, treat it like a barrel-aged stout: approved early, released later.
Baltic Porter41 labels: A strong dark beer fermented as a lager, in the Baltic tradition: smooth, deep, usually 7 to 9%. Few labels and knowledgeable ones; Baltic on the label is a brewer telling you they know the difference. Look for it from breweries that also make bocks and dark lagers.
