How to get Pliny the Younger

What it is

Pliny the Younger is Russian River's triple IPA, released for two weeks every February — and only two weeks. It's the beer that invented the modern release-window pilgrimage: people were lining up around the block in Santa Rosa before lining up for beer was a thing anyone did. Unlike the cellar whales, the Younger doesn't reward patience. It rewards showing up during the window, because when the window closes, it's gone until next year.

I grew up in California and still spend real time there — February in Sonoma County is not a hardship posting.

The legitimate paths

The two pubs

The primary way to drink the Younger is at Russian River's own pubs in Santa Rosa and Windsor during the release window. Expect a line, a per-person pour limit, and a wait that's become its own tradition — the brewery publishes the year's dates and the ground rules ahead of time, usually in January. Weekday mornings are the veteran move.

The allocated draft accounts

Russian River sends limited kegs to a set of longtime draft accounts, mostly in California and a few other West Coast markets, during the window. Bars announce their tapping days on their own channels, and those kegs go in hours. If a February trip to Sonoma County isn't in the cards, a tapping near you is the next-best door — findable with local attention and fast feet.

The window itself

The dates move a little each year. The reliable rhythm: announcement in January, release the first Friday of February-ish, two weeks, done. Our release calendar carries the window each year, marked approximate until Russian River confirms it.

What it typically takes

• Being in the right place during fourteen specific days — this is time-scarcity, not quantity-scarcity
• A line, cheerfully: the Santa Rosa queue is half the experience and the people in it are your people

What we watch for you

Time-scarce beers are where a filing feed earns its keep: labels and variants surface in the federal register on their own schedule, and February has a way of showing up in January's paperwork. Add the Younger to your Grails and the registry does the watching.
