How to get Heady Topper
What it is
Heady Topper is The Alchemist's double IPA out of Stowe, Vermont — the silver can that started the New England IPA's conquest of American beer. For years it traded atop the world's best-beer lists, and unlike most beers on those lists, it is brewed continuously. There is no lottery, no window, no ticket. The scarcity is geographic: it is everywhere in northern Vermont and nowhere else.
The legitimate paths
The brewery in Stowe
The Alchemist's Stowe visitor center sells it most days, with a per-person limit and remarkably little drama. You drive up, you buy your cans, you look at the mountains. As grail hunts go, it is the most civilized in the pantheon — the pilgrimage is the whole mechanism, and Stowe in any season justifies the trip on its own.
The Vermont retail network
Beyond the brewery, The Alchemist supplies a network of Vermont shops and co-ops, concentrated around Stowe, Waterbury, and Burlington. Deliveries follow a weekly rhythm locals know by heart; a polite question at any good Burlington beer shop gets you the schedule. Four-packs at brewery-set retail — the same price at the source and, refreshingly, close to it everywhere else.
The freshness rule
This is a beer with its canning date printed on the bottom of every can, and the brewery's own guidance is famous: drink it fresh. A hazy DIPA's window is measured in weeks. Buy it in Vermont, drink it near Vermont — a Heady that traveled home in a hot trunk for a week isn't the beer the lists were ranking.
What it typically takes
- A trip to northern Vermont — Stowe is under an hour from Burlington's airport
- A cooler in the car; this beer's whole point is freshness
- No lottery, no line at dawn, no allocation math — just geography
What we watch for you
The Alchemist files new labels and variants through the same federal register as everyone else — when something new joins the silver can, the paperwork moves first, and we read it daily. Add it to your Grails and the registry watches Vermont for you.
We read every federal beer label filing, daily — and pantheon names like this one usually file before anyone announces anything. Add it to your Grails and you'll know the day the paperwork moves.
